The Context and Five Versions of Matthew 11:25-30

NLT ~ Matthew 11:25-30 - New Living Translation

  Jesus’ Prayer of Thanksgiving

25 At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: "O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. 26 Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way!

27 "My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."

28 Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light."

ESV ~Matthew 11:25-30 -  English Standard Version 2001
"Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest"

25 At that time Jesus declared, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

NIV ~ Matthew 11:25-30 - New International Version 2011
The Father Revealed in the Son

25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

The Son Gives Knowledge and Rest

25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to infants. 26 Yes, Father, because this was Your good pleasure.27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows] the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son desires to reveal Him.

28 "Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 All of you, take up My yoke and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." *

25-26 Abruptly Jesus broke into prayer: "Thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You've concealed your ways from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people. Yes, Father, that's the way you like to work."

27Jesus resumed talking to the people, but now tenderly. "The Father has given me all these things to do and say. This is a unique Father-Son operation, coming out of Father and Son intimacies and knowledge. No one knows the Son the way the Father does, nor the Father the way the Son does. But I'm not keeping it to myself; I'm ready to go over it line by line with anyone willing to listen.

28-30"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me— [No yoke?]  watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."

In the context Christ was on a preaching mission to the towns of Galilee (Matthew 11:1).  Jesus began His tour responding to John the Baptist’s inquiry: “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else”? (Vs. 3)  He affirmed all that John the Baptist was called to be and do.  “I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived none is greater than John the Baptist.”  (Vs. 11)   In verses 20-24 Jesus pronounced judgment on the unbelievers of Korazin, Bethsaida,  and Capernaum.  “At that time Jesus prayed this prayer:”

Matthew 11:25-30 ~ Composite Prayer

Using Five Different Translations

“Take My Yoke Upon You…

Let Me Teach You!”

O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I thank and praise You for hiding these truths from those who think that they know everything.  Thank You for revealing them to the humble who possess a child-like faith. Yes, Father, You were pleased to reveal Your will to us, Your children, in this way.

Father, You have committed and entrusted all  --- everything to Me.  The only One Who knows God’s Son as He really is, is the Father.  No one knows the Father, except the Son Who is the way, the truth, and the life, “No one can come to the Father, except through Me.” (John 14:6 NLT)  No one knows the Father, except those to whom the Son reveals Himself  --- to those who have eyes of faith to recognize, accept, and follow Him.

Lord Jesus, You made this universal appeal to Your followers: "Come to Me, ALL of you who are tired and weary of carry heavy burdens.”  This invitation is extended to everyone for all time and eternity ---- even for us who live now in the 21st Century.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for Your role model of humility and gentleness of heart that has promised "rest for your souls."

Thank You for this promise that we will find the peace and the rest that we all deeply long for --- a true and lasting rest for the soul --- the deepest kind of John 14:27 peace in the heart of hearts of our personal spiritual being.

Lord Jesus, Thank You for Your up-front challenge: "Take My YOKE upon you and let Me TEACH YOU."  Thank You that You promised that Your yoke is easy to bear, and that You will make my burden lighter because it is shared one day at a time.  Help me to experience this Twenty-First Century Yoke-Analogy & Application:  “Come… Drive With Me.

Let Me Steer You To A Life Under The Smile of God!”

  • ·  Lord I want to live daily with a yoke-consciousness.
  • ·  I need and want a conscious awareness of Your constant presence all my waking moments. Help me to feel that You are only the length of a yoke away each day --- at the Steering Wheel of my life with me as Your passenger.
  • ·  I want to know that You are leading me with Your supernatural strength. (Philipians 4:13) I need You to show me the way for me to do the will of Your Father more perfectly.
  • I want to learn everything I can possibly grasp about You and the Father's will for You that I may better be able to do God’s will in my world of family, friends, and neighbors.
  • ·  Lord Jesus, Joint-Heir, and Yokefellow, I offer this prayer with thanksgiving for all its promises and ask that the Holy Spirit will speak where I cannot.  (Romans 8:27)

I also ask that you will give me the spiritual insight to recognize Your answers and the required faithfulness for me to be held accountable and obedient to You for all its truth.

In Your Name, I pray.   AMEN
